GRANDMOTHER’S SPIRIT
Grandmother’s Spirit observes a woman's ongoing journey of self discovery as she connects to her lineage through improvisational ritual as a means to psychological and spiritual balance. During a shamanic journey, this film captures an unfiltered expression of feminine energy that is raw, untamed, and deeply ancestral. Juxtaposed with Islamic prayers from her grandmother, who wishes her a peaceful journey, the piece becomes both invocation and offering. In this space, a primal force is released from within, a part that refuses to be silenced, controlled, or compromised. Through movement, sound, and touch, she embodies a quiet rebellion of independence, of sacred sensuality, and of the shadow aspects of self that society often fears or rejects.
Shot on 8mm film, the work captures the stories of a lineage, narrated through the use of ancient grains, herbal remedies, and ancestral butters passed down through generations of women in her family. These elements become ritual tools: sources of healing, protection, and transformation. As one anoints her body as a symbolic expelling of the putrefaction she has absorbed from her physical and psychological environment, a reconnection is formed with the wisdom of those who came before.
